Offroad Wheels for Your Van: Everything You Need to Know

The trend is clear: more and more vans and campers are getting a tough offroad look. And it starts with the wheels. But offroad wheels for a commercial van are very different from those for a car. In this guide, we answer the six questions we get most often about offroad wheels for vans and campers.

What makes a wheel suitable for offroad use?

Three things set a true offroad wheel apart from an ordinary car wheel:

  • High load capacity — a commercial van or camper can easily weigh 3,000 kg or more. Car wheels can't handle that. The Rogue wheels that Loodys stocks for offroad vans have a load capacity of up to 1,500 kg per wheel.
  • Robust design with deep spoke channels — more clearance around the brake caliper, better cooling, and sturdier construction against impacts from loose stones.
  • Wide inch and tire combinations — offroad wheels support wider all-terrain tires without rubbing in the wheel arch.

Which size is smartest for offroad: 16, 17 or 18 inch?

For real offroad or standing on gravel, 16 inch is recommended. The tire sidewall is high enough to cushion obstacles and prevent punctures, and you have the widest tire selection. 17 inch is a popular compromise size: still enough tire height, but with a sportier look. 18 inch is possible and looks nice on camper conversions or expedition builds, but keep in mind the tire height is lower so you need to be more careful on sharp rocks.

What's the difference between all-terrain (AT) and mud-terrain (MT) tires?

All-terrain (AT) is the most popular choice for vans and campers: good grip on unpaved roads and comfortable on asphalt. Nearly all modern AT tires carry the 3PMSF snow flake symbol, which also makes them winter-legal (handy for countries where winter tires are mandatory). Mud-terrain (MT) is for real adventurers: maximum grip in mud and sand, but loud on the highway and wears faster on asphalt. For 95% of van and camper drivers, an All-Terrain with 3PMSF is the right choice. At Loodys, we supply these combinations directly with your wheels.

Do I need 4x4 traction for offroad wheels or does it work on a 2WD van?

No, you don't need 4x4. Most van and camper drivers who choose offroad wheels drive a regular 2WD Ducato, Sprinter or Crafter. The wheels plus all-terrain tires alone give noticeably better grip on gravel, sand and wet forest roads, and of course the tough look. For real 4x4 routes, a 4x4 conversion or Dangel system is welcome, but that's separate from your wheel choice.

What's the right tire for longer expeditions?

For expeditions — think Morocco, North Cape or Balkan routes — look at three things: load margin (choose a load index well above the permitted axle weight, fully loaded camper plus reserve for extra water/diesel), repair-friendly tires (an all-terrain with thick sidewalls is easier to patch if you get a puncture), and spare tire and TPMS (install and configure in advance at our Nieuwegein location). Send us your license plate and your route, and we'll recommend the right combination.
