Buying Camper Wheels: The Ultimate Guide to the Right Choice

More and more camper enthusiasts want their van to be not just comfortable, but also stylish and unique. And that starts with the wheels. Whether you have a Fiat Ducato camper, a converted VW Transporter or a Mercedes Sprinter: the right camper wheels make a difference in appearance, performance and safety. In this guide we answer the seven questions we get asked most often.

What's the difference between regular wheels and specific camper wheels?

A camper often weighs over 3,000 kg, loaded with interior fittings, water systems, kitchenettes and luggage. Regular car wheels aren't designed for that — they lack the load capacity. Camper wheels, like the Rogue line that Loodys stocks, are engineered for the higher axle weight of a loaded van or camper. Alloy (aluminium) is also lighter than steel, which helps your payload: every kilo you save on the wheel is a kilo you can load as cargo. Lighter weight = slightly better fuel consumption too.

What load index do I need for a camper?

The load capacity of the wheel and tyre together must handle at least the maximum axle weight. For a Fiat Ducato with a permitted rear axle weight of 2,100 kg, that means: each rear wheel and tyre must be able to carry a minimum of 1,050 kg. The Rogue wheels that Loodys stocks have a load capacity up to 1,500 kg each — plenty for most campers. At Loodys we always check before delivery that the combination you choose is correct for your vehicle, so you know everything is in order. Uncertain? Send us your license plate and we'll work it out for you.

What PCD do the most common camper base vehicles have?

The PCD (bolt pattern) determines whether a wheel physically fits your camper. The most common ones for camper base vehicles:

  • 5×118 — Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, Citroën Jumper (the most popular camper chassis)
  • 5×130 — Fiat Ducato Maxi, Renault Master, Opel Movano (2001-2021)
  • 6×130 — Mercedes Sprinter 2006+, VW Crafter I (2006-2017)
  • 5×120 — VW Transporter T5/T6/T7, VW Crafter II (2017+), MAN TGE
  • 5×160 — Ford Transit Custom
  • 5×108 — Ford Transit Connect, Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo

What wheel size works best on a camper?

Most campers come from the factory on 16 inch — that's the standard size for the Fiat Ducato and Mercedes Sprinter and offers the best balance between comfort and appearance. An upgrade to 17 inch gives a bolder look and rides just fine; 18 inch is possible but comfort suffers slightly due to lower tyre sidewall height. For off-road use and wild camping on gravel, 16 inch remains the most common size, because the tyre wall provides enough cushioning over obstacles.

Do I need TPMS sensors on my camper?

For most recent camper base vehicles (Fiat Ducato from 2014, Mercedes Sprinter from 2018, VW Crafter II from 2017) TPMS is mandatory for MOT. We supply universal TPMS sensors that we install and configure on-site at your vehicle — at our location in Nieuwegein in one visit. For older campers it's optional. Costs are around €40 per sensor; we'll give you the exact price in your quote so you're never caught off guard.

How do I know if a wheel is MOT-compliant for my camper?

Whether your camper's wheels pass MOT depends on three things: the wheel's load index, the tyre's load index, and the maximum permitted total weight on your registration. At Loodys we always check before delivery that the combination you choose is correct for your vehicle. Uncertain or want peace of mind? Send us your license plate and we'll work it out for you — then you can hit the road worry-free.

What does a complete set of camper wheels with fitting cost?

A total price depends on four things: which wheel, which tyres (all-season, all-terrain, winter), whether you need TPMS sensors, and whether we fit them in Nieuwegein or you go to your own fitter. For a real example: request a quote via WhatsApp with your vehicle model — you'll get a transparent breakdown of costs within a working day. Many camper owners pair their new wheels straight away with all-terrain tyres, ideal if you like wild camping or visiting sites that aren't fully paved.
